How To Hardwire My Device

Modified on Thu, 23 Jan at 10:24 AM

(If you need general troubleshooting instructions, see this article for those steps.)

Sometimes for troubleshooting purposes, we’ll ask you to bypass the router and hardwire directly into the internet connection instead.

If you need to bypass your router, please follow the steps listed below.

Step One: Locate Your Power Injector

Locate your power injector (a small white or black rectangular piece about 3-4" long with two cables coming out of one end, probably close to your router.  See photo below).

Step Two: Plug in Your Device

Unplug the cable from the LAN port on the power injector. Use an Ethernet cable to plug your device into the LAN port.

Wait a few extra minutes for your device to realize it has an internet connection. It will usually take a little longer than usual for your device to connect to the internet this way, because it has to acquire a new IP address when you plug it in.

  • Note: You must connect your device to the LAN port, not the PoE port, as your dish will lose power if you unplug the PoE port. (If that happens, just plug it back in, ensure that the light on the power injector comes back on, and wait about 3 minutes for your dish to restart before proceeding.)

Step Three: Test The Original Issue While Hardwired

Great job hardwiring your device!

Now that you’re hardwired, please test the original issue (such as slow speeds, trouble connecting to the internet, etc.) and see if there is any change.

Bypassing the router is helpful for troubleshooting. However, you won’t want to bypass a router long-term as your device won’t be behind the router’s firewall this way. Internet connections are designed to work optimally with routers connected upstream of devices.
