How to Set Up My TP-Link EX920 Router

Modified on Tue, 28 Jan at 6:01 AM

To set up your TP-Link EX920 Router, follow these simple steps below!

Step #1 - Download the TP-Link Aginet app on your phone

Download for Apple

Download for Android

Step #2 - Unbox the router and plug it in

The cable from the LAN port in your power injector should be connected to the port labeled "WAN-LAN" on the back of the router.

There is a wiring diagram in the little booklet that comes with the router in case that's helpful. Where the wiring diagram depicts a "modem/router," that would be your power injector (which is a white, brick-shaped device).

Wait until the router light turns blue before proceeding to the next step.

Step #3 - Connect to the router's default wifi

Using your phone (or whichever device has the Aginet app installed), connect to the router’s default wifi.  The wifi connection information is on the bottom of the router.

You can find the Network name next to where it says "SSID:"  You can find the password just above that, next to where it says, "Wireless Password/PIN:"

(On your EX920 router, you will see a second SSID listed.  This is the network name for your WiFi 6e network.)

Step #4 - Use the Aginet app to walk through the router setup process

(Individual walk-through steps are listed in order below):

4.1 Terms of Use and User Experience Improvement Program

  • Agree to the Terms of Use (it’s optional to join the User Experience Improvement Program), and then click “Continue.”

4.2 Log in

  • Click “Log in” or “Create a TP-Link ID.”

(We recommend creating a TP-Link ID.  You can log in without creating one, but you won’t be able to access certain managing controls for your router without it.)

Your TP-Link ID is different from your wifi password. The TP-Link ID will be what you use to get into the app.

  • If you already have a TP-Link ID, click “Log In.”

(Please record your credentials in a safe place, as our customer support team is unable to retrieve this information for you.)

  • After pressing “Create a TP-Link ID,” enter in your email address.  A verification email will be sent to that address.
  • Choose a unique password for your account, and enter it in both fields to confirm it.
  • You will need to accept the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy in order to continue.
  • Go to the verification email that will come to your inbox, and press “Click to Finish Registration” to verify your account. This verification link will expire after 1 hour.
  • Once your account is verified, go back to the Aginet app to start using it!  Log in with the email address and password that you set up.

4.3 No Devices Found

Note: If you reach a screen that says "No Devices Found," please refer back to Step #3 to make sure you are connected to the TP-Link's WiFi.

4.4 EX920 is found!

  • A screen should come up on the Aginet app, saying that your device is found!  Click “Set up Device.”

4.5 How will you connect your device to the internet?

  • Select the option that says “Connect to a Modem.”

4.6 Set Device Password

  • Please note that this is STILL not your wifi password. This is also separate from the password connected with your TP-Link ID. You will need this password to access and manage your router.
  • Please record this password in a secure location, as Customer Support will be unable to view or provide this password for you. If you lose this password, you will not be able to access or manage router settings.
  • Click "Next."

4.7 Where have you placed this device?

  • Choose the option that best describes the room where your router is located (e.g. kitchen, living room, etc.).
  • Click “Next.”

4.8 Connect your device to the internet

  • You can leave all the default settings in place.  Nothing here needs to be changed.
  • Click “Next.”

4.9 Create your Wi-Fi network – Band Steering

  • You can leave “Band Steering” turned on.
  • Click “Next.”

4.10 Create your Wi-Fi network  – network name and password

  • This is your wifi name (SSID) and password.  Delete the default connection information that came with the router and enter your own.  Please record this information in a secure place so that you can refer to it later when connecting your devices to the wifi.
  • Click "Next."

(Additional step for the EX920 router only):

  • Create your 6 GHz Wi-Fi Network - Network name and password.  This is your wifi name (SSID) and password for the 6 GHz channel.  We recommend naming this with a different name than what you chose in the previous step. (For example, if you chose “MYLASTNAME” as your network name, you could consider “MYLASTNAME_6” as the 6 GHz channel name.) Naming the channel with a unique name lets you choose which channel you want each device to connect to. The 6 GHz channel will work better at a shorter range, so you might not want devices that are further from the router connecting to that one.
  • Create a password for the 6 GHz channel.
  • Please record this information in a secure place so that you can refer to it later when connecting your devices to the wifi.
  • Click "Next."

4.11 Connect to your network

  • Connect your phone to the new wifi name and password you just set up by going into your phone's wifi settings.
  • Enter the new wifi name and password.
  • Go back to the Aginet app and click “Join”

4.12 Your network is now up

  • Your network is ready to use – great job!
  • If you have a mesh point to set up, click "Add Agent." (An "Agent" in this context is a mesh point.)
  • Otherwise, click "Done."

  • A screen might pop up after you hit “done,” asking if you’d like to turn on two-step verification for your account.  You can either set that up, or hit “maybe later” to proceed to the next step.

Step #5 - Bind your device?

If you don't bind the router to your TP Link ID, you'll only be able to manage the router during when you are actually connected to your own home wifi. If you want to be able to manage the router while you are away from home, you'll need to bind it.

  • Click “Bind Now”

You should now see the "Network" screen, which is the default "home screen" in the app.

  • Nodes = How many routers & mesh points you have set up.
  • Clients = How many devices are connected to the wifi

You can refer to the app to see if there are any error messages or internet issues. You can also see which devices are connected to the network, set up parental controls, and more.  For more information on how to navigate the Aginet app, please refer to this article.

Congratulations on completing your router setup!  Enjoy your new wifi!
